Summer is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to get outside and do something fun with your dog. Here are my favorite things to do in Colorado in the summer with my dog.
Westminster Hills Dog Park: This dog park is 420-acres of adventure for you and your dog. In the summer, the creek is full and great for cooling off your pooch after you both enjoy some hiking in the area. There are trees here and there for some shade, but do be aware that most of the area is in full sun- so plan accordingly for both you and your dog. Sunscreen, hats and water are a must when it gets toasty. Also note that this area is only partially fenced, so you want to make sure you practice your dog’s recall before heading out. That being said, this is a great spot to bring your dog to burn off that energy with hiking, fetch or playing with their furry friends.
Hiking in Estes Park: Near Rocky Mountain National Park (where dogs are not allowed on the trails), Estes Park does have many of fun dog-friendly hikes. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
-Lily Mountain: 4 miles round trip; moderate to difficult hike; steep uphill sections. (Definitely don’t do this until snow has melted in the area; I speak from experience.)
-Coulson Gulch Trail #916 (To North Saint Vrain Creek): about 5.5 miles round trip; moderate difficulty. The nice thing about this trail is that your dog can be off leash (as long as they are under voice command). Also, there is a small creek for your water-loving dogs.

Four Noses Brewing Company: Sometimes a cold beer with friends after a long day out in the summer sun can end up being the best part of your day. Especially if you get to bring your furry friends along too. Four Noses Brewing Company not only has stellar beer, but they also allow well-behaved, leashed dogs into their brewery and on their patio. Various food trucks also visit regularly for some fun, new foods. This brewery also has the added benefit of being right next to a doggy pool at CRCG and the pet supply store Urban Dogg where you can get some goodies for your dog before you sit down and enjoy a good beer.
Denver Pet Expo: This expo is celebrating its 5th year on Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 from 10am-6pm at the Denver Merchandise Mart. The expo is free and costs only $5.00 for parking. The best part… you can bring your dog! This expo is full of vendors of pet supplies and equipment, treats, rescues, and fun talks and demos. It is a great time and a fun thing you can enjoy with your dog inside on those hot summer days. (*Note: Proof of current vaccination records required and dogs must be leashed.)
Dog Dayz: At the end of the summer, Scott Carpenter Pool in Boulder closes down to the human public and opens up this great pool for the dogs. Currently the date is TBD and it does last for two weeks, but don’t miss this wonderful time for all of your water-loving dogs to have one last hurrah before fall. Don’t worry if you don’t live in Boulder, many public pools close for people at the end of the summer and open their pools to dogs, even if only for a day.
So get out there and enjoy the summer with your dog! If you have other activities that you enjoy doing with your dog in the summer, share your hot tips on my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ingoodpawsdt
